Supporting Your Local Bookstore (Part II)

Continuing our journey through Buffalo’s literary scene, today we’re covering three more of my favorite, independently-owned bookstores. This week’s focus will be Burning Books, Gutterpop Comics and Zawadi Books.

Located on Jefferson Avenue on the cusp of Buffalo’s Eastside, Zawadi Books, owned by Sharon and Kenneth Holley is a small but cozy bookstore that has long-served the tight-knit community of Hamlin Park. Named after the swahili word for gift, Zawadi is actually the store’s second name after it was renamed in 2010, changing from its original title of Harambee Books and Crafts.Zawadi specializes in literature by and revolving around people of African descent, with a collection including poetry, genealogy, cookbooks, young adult fiction, as well as works by local authors, greeting cards, artwork, and more!

Originally opened in 2016 on Elmwood, Gutter Pop Comics has been enjoying a new lease on life in its new location on Hertel Avenue (opened in 2021). Owned by Stephen Floyd (who also works on indie record label Drug Party Tape & indie publisher One Percent Press), Gutterpop Comics - to no great shock - caters to comic-book aficionados, no matter your taste. They have a wide-selection of all comics, graphic novels, young adult literature and even a selection of content focusing specifically on the LGBTQ+ and works by authors and writers of color.

Burning Books

Opened in September 2009 (and on the anniversary of the Attica prison uprising) Burning Books focuses exclusively on literature and writing material relating to social justice issues. They also supplement this focus with an inventory of related posters, games and gifts. Burning Books enjoys an ongoing (and lively) speaker series, while also serving as a community space which “brings together people from all different backgrounds to find common cause.”

We have one more article still to come in our exploration of Buffalo’s amazing bookstore scene. Check back soon for part III of our series!
