What’s The Fuss About Maple?

Autumn always brings forth a touch of pumpkin, a sprinkle of spice, and a good reason to enjoy all things maple.

This season, the Read it and Eat subscription box is gearing up to share a ton of mapley goodness. We hope you’re as ready as we are.

What’s The Fuss About Maple?

Have you ever tapped a tree to collect sap?

It’s fun to do just for the heck of it on your own, but this season’s book, The Sugar Season by Douglas Whynott, will teach you everything you need to know about the process of creating maple syrup, starting with the sap.

Being from the East Coast, maple syrup is kind of a big thing, especially as you get closer to Canada. The farmers go through so much to create the syrup we pour over our breakfast foods. From the tapping to the boiling of the sugar to the insane amounts of energy and skill it takes to mass produce, this book covers it all.

It also discusses the importance of temperature in regard to getting that pure maple flavor, and how a few degrees can really make or break an entire season.

What Else is in the Box?

Have you ever had a pancake with popcorn in it?

Yes, you read that right.

This season’s box contains pancake mix from Long Table Pancakes. They pop an heirloom red popcorn, mill into into a whole-grain fairy dust, and send them on their way.

Flavors like the oat, almond, popcorn, and poppy seed might sound strange from the start, but once the air gets in the popcorn and stays in the cake, you’re in for the fluffiest pancakes you’ve ever had in your life.

And, of course, what pancake is good without the maple syrup?

After (or while) you read the book, douse your pancakes in handcrafted organic maple syrup from Baird Farm. Seriously, once you learn what goes into the maple syrup process, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for eating it.

Is That Maple Flavored Gum I See?

Sure is. Comes from a place called Simply Gum. It’s naturally rich, sweet, and smooth, and tastes just like maple syrup.

The gum pieces are made with a biodegradable tree sap called chicle. While the pieces themselves aren’t wrapped, there’s a packet of “post chew wraps” for easy disposal.

There’s also a little bracelet included from the non-profit FEED. The company is driven to change the world through people’s choices of what to buy and wear. The beaded bracelet, a fan favorite, is finally back, so we just had to include it, especially since purchasing the bracelet helps serve five school meals to kids in need.

Of course, no subscription box would be complete without a copy of the Toasty sticker, as well as a maple sticker as Toasty’s friend this month.

Okay, I’m Sold. Where Do I Get This?

Thanks so much for your consideration!

You can head on over to the Bookmarks and Breadsticks shop to get your hands on this season’s box.

Additionally, if any of the previous season’s boxes are still available, you can snag one of those at a discounted rate, as well. There’s also always the Toasty sticker floating around if you want to grab some more for your friends.

Enjoy this season’s treats, and thanks again for supporting local and artisanal businesses.
