There are so many ways to find book recommendations with the internet quite literally at our fingertips and in our pockets. The Storygraph App, GoodReads, Amazon, NYT Best Sellers, you name it, someone has a list for you that includes THE BEST of books.
But sometimes, and maybe it's just me, I want to reject the Best Sellers list. The hype can be overwhelming. Am I the only one? Suddenly I have analysis paralysis with 15 different books in my cart and I'm not sure which to get, when to get, and worried I won't like it. Will I offend my friend if I don't like it? Will Booktube know I don't like it? It can be OVERWHELMING.
Blind Dates with Books are a Ton of Fun
I was thinking recently about a collaboration I had with a fellow booktuber, ABookOlive. Olive and I exchanged book boxes and it was so much fun to be SURPRISED by a book again. (Now, it's my own fault because I own a lot of books so my friends are afraid to buy me books because I most likely own the book they want to give me, but I digress). Collaborating with Olive, she somehow found not one but TWO books I had never read before and these books were some of my favorite reads of the entire year.
My two blind dates with books were so refreshing. I did not feel any pressure to like or enjoy the books (thankfully I loved them) because they were gifts and part of the gift was the MYSERTY surrounding it. You've seen unboxing videos on Youtube, the appeal is the unknown and the reaction from the unboxing process. I really thought that could be fun for other to enjoy
Finding Fiction Books with Food as the Focus
I read predominantly non-fiction books. I love knowledge and I'm insanely curious. That said, especially in the summer, I want some fluffy, easy, and swoony reads. 2021 has been a trial-by-fire of fic
tion books with food at the focus and it has been a blast. What gets me so excited is these are books I can surprise friends with and we have something in common! Not everyone...or most anyone...is going to read about the global history of Salt. You should. It's a great book. But most people won't.
A favorite read of the summer has been The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent! This was a cover by, completely drawn in by the cover, and I didn't even read the back of the book! That's what got me thinking about how much fun impulse and blind date books are!
